ACI Actions Stockyard Watch:
Investigation Report 8-28-07

On Tuesday August 28th, 2007 I drove into the lot next to the Euclid Stockyards in Ontario, California. I immediately noticed a downed cow.

Downed cow at Euclid Stockyards, 8-27-07

I left the vacant lot next door and drove on to the Euclid property and pulled up next to the downed cow. I immediately noticed she was having tremors, foaming at the mouth, and had urinated all over herself. I called the owner of the stockyard and couldn’t reach him by phone. I then ran into the office and asked the office girls to get the owner or somebody who could euthanize the downed cow. They took me outside and told two workers that there was a downed cow on the back of the property. They said they knew and would get to her as soon as they got done with the downers on the front of the property. I went back to my truck and checked the temperature gauge, it was 102 degrees. I went back up front and saw that there were 3 downed cows in the front and I noticed the two workers had a chain hooked up to a tractor and the chain was leading to something in the back of a livestock trailer. I walked to the back of the trailer and noticed a cow that had just been shot, but still kicking being dragged out of the back of the trailer. I told the workers to stop, and that it was against the law to drag an animal that was still alive with a chain. They obliged. They then went and shot two more downed cows in front of me. I walked back to my truck by the original cow and waited for the workers. They showed up about 5 minutes later and shot her in the back of the head. I told them “No” that was the wrong way to do it. I then showed them where to shoot her and they did it right the second time. Their was one more to euthanize and they did that correctly. I patrolled the property once more to make sure there were no more downers and left.

After leaving the Euclid Stockyards I went to the Ontario Livestock Auction. I pulled in and got out of my truck I could hear puppies crying. I went over to a big box and saw about a 2 week old puppy in a box left their all alone with no food or water. Two other puppies came running up to me along with a little boy I picked up both puppies and put them in the box. Two looked like brother and sister, but one didn’t match in color at all. The little boy said the white puppy was his. I told him that I was taking the puppies to the Inland Valley Humane Society. His father came up and said that the white dog was his. I gave the white dog back to the little boy and gave the other two puppies to my investigators and told them to get back in the truck and turn the air conditioner on. I made a quick pass at the auction and noticed nothing legally wrong and headed to the IVHS to turn in the puppies.
